If you’ve grown tired for vampires that sparkle and year for good old fashioned vampires that crave blood and aren’t afraid to get aggressive then you’ll love this movie. This is a movie for a younger crowd but it is sure to be loved by everyone that sees it. It’s filled with action but it has a good amount of humor by way of cheesy one-liners, too.
The movie has some great young talent like Zoey Duetch, Lisa Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, and Cameron Monaghan (fans of the hit Showtime series, Shameless, will recognize him from playing Ian Gallagher). These young people bring loads of energy to the scenes that bring the film to life.
In Vampire Academy there are evil vampires that like to suck blood and kill purely for pleasure, the Strigoi. There are also vampires that only drink blood to survive and rely on donors, the Moroi. Each of the Moroi have control of one of the four elements – earth, air, fire, or water. Then there are the dhampir, who have the job of guarding the Moroi and killing Strigoi. Their education at St. Vladimir’s will help them learn how to be better at their jobs. Rose Hathaway is one of the dhampir and she is half human and half vampire. He best friend, Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, is a Moroi and she is the last of her line so there are many out there that would like to get their hands on her and use her powers for their own benefit. When the Princess runs away, Rose has no choice but to follow her and protect her to the best of her abilities.
It should be no surprise that this movie might remind you a bit of Mean Girls as it shares the same director, Mark Waters. The difference? There’s a whole lot more biting in this movie!
