Squidoo vs Hubpage: Reversal of Fortune

Today while updating one of my old lens I saw some puzzling stats (at least for me): I was getting traffic to my lens FROM one of my related Hub.

Believe me when I say I was shock, because never ever before did a Hub sent me any squidoo traffic. Especially that my Hubs never did that well. So I went in and check the stats on 3 Favorite Manufacturers Of Toys Not Made In China. Oh wow, it is now getting in a week what it use to get in a few months…. while the related squidoo pages, that always did pretty nicely were just “hanging in there”. So thanks Hubpage for maintaining, among other, my Kathe Kruse Toys page alive.

I have to admit that I find this worrisome. Because yes traffic is down on Squidoo for many. Although lensrank is better in my case, traffic is down since the end of February. Before that, many said they experience a big dip in traffic, but I did not (compare to previous year). Right now I don’t even have to look at my previous stats to know I am taking a big hit.

So anyone telling you “diversify”, they are right. Listen to them. I am glad I did. Not all my eggs belong to Squidoo. Oh and by the way this is absolutely not a “OMG Squidoo is over”. In fact I am still standing by what I said here and elswhere: iIn a couple of months, maybe before, Squidoo is going to be back on track and hopefully really spam free….

I am actually having fun on Squidoo right now

Yes, seriously, I am having fun. I haven’t been this motivated since a long while. All these new and upcoming Squidoo filters have been the kick in the behind I needed to do spring clean. I haven’t been hit yet (either on newly published lenses or on updated lenses) but it is coming sometime next week since I am a giant squid.

Another thing that makes me happy, is to see accounts and lenses many of us have been reporting for ages being locked up. I am not talking about thin shopping lenses (they were never, until now, against TOS), I am talking about utter crap (think TOS violation, stolen artwork, duplicate content) AND accounts that use automated script to update hundreds of lenses daily, to auto like hundreds of lenses daily and to bless any crap under the sun. A few angels have lost their wings (better late than never) but still some continues their highly dubious activities. I really wish to know how less than  35 visits a week can get and maintain tiers one ranking (we are talking LR around 1200 here)…..I hardly keep mine with regular sales and hundreds of visits.

So while some forums, IM and spammers are going on about the upcoming “end of squidoo”, I am  working on my lense before the filter hit. I have already salvage what I am sure would have been caught by the filter, but I have still a few more that are 100% “filter attractive” and I am working on them this weekend. Then after that, I’ll let the filter do its thing and see what needs to be done, and what it wants exactly.

I haven’t moved content yet, although I have a few little pieces of content here and there that didn’t fit the new Frankenstein lenses (see yesterdays post “What Are You Doing With Your Thin Squidoo Lenses“) that I have kept and will use elsewhere.

Here’s 2 new lenses made out of various thin lenses: Diamond Gifts and Tahitian Pearl Jewelry. These 2 are the result of combining 8 thin lenses.

What Are You Doing With Your Thin Squidoo Lenses

Finally Squidoo has decided to clean the Augean stables. In a series of announcements, Squidoo let its members know that things that were tolerated are now no longer welcome. Among the most welcome changes is the new coloring page “squidDon’t” status and the removal of thin lenses and heavy affiliate lenses. The new Squidoo filters haven’t yet hit the giants, but I am tidying up my account anyway. Then when the filter hit, I’ll deal with what is problematic.

Right now I am doing three main things:

1-Delete lenses: I don’t plan on deleting much lenses, but I have trashed my 2 squidoo angel related lenses (time sink, useless and I haven’t paid attention to them since I made them over 2 years ago). I also trashed my photography lens, that was nothing more than a couple of pics and nothing else. Some of my photography can be see on Redgage anyway so this lens was pointless and uninteresting. I also deleted some lenses that I combined together (see point 2)

2- Combine thin lenses together: obviously, it’s not something that can be done with every single thin lenses but it’s a was to save your content and make a nice page. I did this Affordable US Silver Coins page combining 3 thin coin collecting lenses and I added the content of three lenses to this already existing lens: Jewelry With Cats

3- Regular update of top performing lenses: replace products if needed, add new interesting products, correct grammatical errors (this one is a never ending task for me since English is not my native language). While doing this I will also do two things: if I feel it’s “overly commercial” I will remove a few products to balance the content/product ration. I will be even more picky at selecting products as well. If it’s not a real 100%¨sale lens, I’ll still make sure to have description in both part of the amazon modules. Here’s my Greek Mythology Creatures Coloring Pages updated. If you want to know what type of coloring pages are acceptable, this one is. i contacted Bonnie and her response was “Hi Nathalie, Your page is fine. These are not the type of coloring pages that we’re locking. Thanks”

Other little adjustments I have been doing includes the removal of the buy/check price buttons on my own affiliate boxes and also I have changed some of my own Amazon affiliate links to Squidoo modules when I felt I had too many.

Obviously right now I am driving blind, but I don’t think I am wasting my time. The lenses that I removed or combined where a shame anyway and it the long run It will help me and squidoo.

Are you doing anything special while waiting for the filter to hit you?

How To Add Unique Amazon Tracking ID To Your Squidoo Lenses (Or Any Other Pages)

Yesterday, lensmaster AJ Ashley started a thread on Facebook about using unique Amazon ID to track your lenses performance. I started doing this recently and I am slowly in the process of adding a unique tracking to each of my (many) lenses. It’s a long job because I have way too many lenses. But it makes a lot of sens.

This allows you to pin point exactly which lenses bring the clicks and the sales. Obviously it takes time to change all those links but it is well worth it. You can have a nice overview of Amazon performance on your lenses by using the  Tracking ID Summary report:

Here’s how to do it (with screenshots too!):

1- Log into your Amazon affiliate dashboard.

2- Locate on the left navigation “tracking ID box” and click “manage”:

How to add an Amazon tracking ID

3-On the manage page, click “add a tracking ID” :

Add tracking ID to Amazon

4- Type a tracking ID you would like to have and click search:

pick your tracking ID

5- Click use selected to have this ID added to your bank of Amazon ID’s:

You new Amazon ID!

6-Congratulations! You have a new Amazon tracking ID:

Your new shiny Amazon tracking ID

Now whenever you make an Amazon link, just pick the correct ID in the drop down menu like this:

For older links you wish to change to new tracking ID, you don’t need to re-do the links from scratch! Just edit the links directly on your Squidoo page and replace the old ID with the new.

Monster High Dolls Make Me Wish….

Monster High dolls make me wish my daughter was older so I could buy myself  buy her some Monster High dolls without my husband thinking I am crazy. I love these dolls. They are very cool.

When I was a little girl I hated Barbie to the point where my parents (after I decapitated my fist doll at age 3) capitulated and start giving me cool toys such as cars, truck and cowboys. The only Barbie style dolls I ever  played with were the Gold Medal Barbie (I think that is how she was called) from the mid 70′s and of course The Bionic Woman doll. These were cool. I wish I still had them.

How cool it would have been to have Monster High dolls when I was little! It’s Christmas soon and these dolls will certainly be pretty hot once again this year. And with a few months to go we can wish for an early release of one of the 2013 Monster high dolls line…. wish can come true!

If you plan on offering some Monster High doll this Christmas I would like to suggest you buy them early on to make sure you get the dolls you want.

If you want a look at some of these dolls, I have compiled all the officially licensed dolls as well as a selection of OOAK custom Monster High dolls for each character:

Draculaura dolls

Lagoona Blue dolls

Frankie Stein dolls

Clawdeen Wolf dolls

Abbey Bominable dolls

Scarah Screams dolls
